Disability Inclusion

Making sure no one is left behind because of a disability.

  • Our Approach

Access and Dignity for Every Person

People with disabilities are among the most excluded in crisis and displacement settings often facing barriers to education, healthcare, livelihoods and even basic humanitarian assistance. In emergencies, these barriers can mean the difference between safety and serious harm.

Our Disability Inclusion approach ensures that every program we run from education and health to emergency response is designed with accessibility in mind from the start, not added on afterward. This means physically accessible facilities, inclusive teaching methods, and assistance that reaches people with disabilities without requiring them to ask twice.

We also work directly with people with disabilities and their families to identify barriers specific to their community, and with local organizations that specialize in disability rights, to make sure our response is informed by lived experience, not assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does LEAD International Development have a dedicated disability inclusion focus?
People with disabilities often face additional barriers to accessing education, healthcare and humanitarian assistance, especially during emergencies — and are frequently overlooked in program design.
Is disability inclusion a separate program, or part of your other work?
It's integrated across all our programs — education, health, humanitarian response and community development — rather than run as a standalone initiative.
How do you ensure programs are actually accessible?
We design facilities, teaching methods and response systems with accessibility built in from the start, and work directly with people with disabilities and specialized local organizations to guide our approach.
Do you work with local disability rights organizations?
Yes. Partnering with organizations led by people with disabilities helps ensure our programs are grounded in real, lived experience.
How can I support this program?
You can support our Disability Inclusion work through donations, partnerships, or by volunteering. Visit our How to Help page to learn more.
